St Davids High School

History helps us understand change and how the society we live in came to be. History is an important subject on the curriculum as it provides learners with an understanding of how society has been shaped today. Students develop a variety of essential skills whilst studying the subject. There are five skills of history; chronological awareness, historical knowledge and understanding, interpretations, historical enquiries and organisation and communication.

History helps students to develop critical thinking skills to look beyond the headlines, to ask questions properly and to express their own opinions.

  • History helps students to understand change and how the community, nation and world we live in came to be.
  • History helps students understand the origins of modern political and social problems.
  • History makes students appreciate that people in the past were not just good or bad, but motivated in complex and inconsistent ways. It teaches students how and why people behaved as they did, whether they are Elizabeth I, Churchill or John Lennon.
